Is Estmating a Viable Career Path?

In the January 2013 issue of ASPE National, this article was published which discusses estimating as a viable career choice. Below is a direct quote from the article that you might find interesting.

"I believe with new technologies and changing client needs, the additional skills required can make estimating anexciting career choice for those entering the industry today. In 2010, the Bureau of Labor Statistics showed estimating as a top 10 career in regards to growth (25%) through 2020, while Money and PayScale.com say construction estimating is a top 100 "best jobs". Impressive when you think of all the careers that are out there."

BIM will continue to grow and change the industry!
For those of you who are currently students and are debating on pursuing Estimating v.s. the more traditional Project Management career path, I'd encourage you to read this article and see for yourself the benefits of an estimating career. It is encouraging for me to see the current changes within the industry and the amount of value an estimator can add to a specific firm. BIM (Building Information Modeling) along with IPD & LEED have made the Estimating roll far more prominent then ever before and with the continued growth of these different softwares and systems, the roll of the Estimator will continue to grow as well. The Estimator will also become a unique creature in the construction world because they will be required to have the tech savvy nature to operate these systems while maintaining a continued relationship oriented demeanor in order to best meet the changing needs of designers and clients.
